Estimating Costs and Allocating Resources
Helpful Resources
1. Estimating Instructional Development (ID) Time
This website features valuable tips concerning estimating time for instructional development projects such as: development time vs. training time, non-writing time vs. project time, and executing time spent. The most helpful thing to me about this resource how the author uses ratios to illustrate his points.
2. Estimating Costs and Time in Instructional Design
This resource was great in providing an assortment of estimates for different ID tasks. Also this resource gives a clearer understanding of ratios that are most likely to be suitable for each task as well as including links to other resources such as cost estimation spreadsheets, stock photographs, and digital recordings
Michael Greer’s site tells the PM not to trust the ratios, which is a great point because the development time varies from project to project and from person to person. It is important for the PM to know the team members and what each member can handle in a particular amount of time. The site mentions that the non-writing time takes up about 80% of the development and this will be helpful for the PM to know if making the timelines.
ReplyDeleteAfter reviewing the Michael Greer site I was left wondering a bit how it was to help. It appeared as if it was simply just a site to promote his book and training. I really did not get any hard core instructional aid from this. Even Mr. Greer himsself says not to trust the ratios he speaks of in his writings.
ReplyDeleteGreat sites, Norris! Michael Greer’s PM Resources is a very helpful list of guidelines for estimating ID projects. Interesting statistic that he lists about 80% of the time is spent on “non-writing time” including “front-end analysis, brainstorming, preliminary design, and SME review and feedback.” That’s a great point to include the time spent on these activities in the PM’s estimate.
